How I fell in love with Frida

I first became aware of Frida Kahlo, nearly 25 years ago when I was given a copy of her Illustrated Diaries as a Birthday gift. I have been fascinated by her story ever since. Her struggle with her health, her relationships, her politics, her uncompromising style and of course, her Art.

Over the years, my home has become a shrine to Frida as friends who visited Mexico bought back beautiful presents in colourful tin and postcards and posters were framed.

In 2005 Frida had a major exhibition at the Tate Modern in London, I was so excited to finally see her paintings, I remember finding all of my favourite pieces and marvelling at how small some of them were, imagining her confined to her bed, with her easel suspended above her so that she could paint.

I have several 'Frida' friends and we all try to give each other Frida inspired gifts every Christmas, there have been tea towels, dolls, plates and even a rubber duck, but for Christmas in 2016 I was given some beautiful fabric with Frida's image and I decided to make a bag, not just any bag, but the most beautiful Frida bag ever.

With a background in fashion, I did not even own a sewing machine, so I spent two weeks, blanket stitching the first Frida bag combined with heavy denim, I made my hands so sore! I was thrilled with the result and the first time I took her out, 3 people asked me, "Where did you get that bag!"

Of course, my Frida friends all wanted one, so I bought a vintage hand crank Singer sewing machine and started sewing, determined that I was only going to make beautiful pieces that every Frida fan would love, each bag takes approximately 6 -7 hours to make and is a labour of love! The market place is full of Frida merchandise but I like to think that Frida would have loved the Te Amo Totes Bags xx
